東京都の石原慎太郎知事は１４日、東日本大震災への国民の対応について記者団に問われ「我欲で縛られた政治もポ ピュリズムでやっている。それを一気に押し流す。津波をうまく利用して、我欲をやっぱり一回洗い落とす必要がある。やっぱり天罰だと思う。被災者の方々は かわいそうですよ」と述べた。
知事は一連の発言の前に、持論を展開して「日本人のアイデンティティーは我欲になっちゃった。アメリカのアイデンティティーは自由。フランスは自由と博愛と平等だ。日本はそんなもんない。我欲だよ。物欲、金銭欲」と語っていた。
同日、この後に開いた記者会見で「天罰」の意味について「日本に対する天罰だ」と釈明。「大きな反省の一つのよ すがになるんじゃないか。それしなかったら犠牲者たちは浮かばれない」と話した。天罰について発言した際、「『被災された人は非常に耳障りな言葉に聞こえ るかもしれないが』と言葉を添えた」としたが、実際には話していなかった。
